Jamplay (Jam Play)
from Jamplay.comProduct description
Learning a music instrument can be an arduous and daunting task. The truth is, it is difficult and grueling and sometimes you just want to quit and chuck your instrument right out the window in front of a speeding bus. (Or perhaps that was just me.) But, we persevere and in the end we become decent or even good musicians.
Like the old adage says, "Anything worth doing is worth doing well." The Jamplay (Jam Play) Guitar Course is well worth the time and money. If your serious about learning the guitar than this website is worth checking out. Whether your into bluegrass, classical or head banging to heavy metal there are instructors ready to guide you there.
Jamplay is a video instructed course. The progression of videos don't assume that you have any prior guitar or even musical knowledge. The course starts at the basics and build sequentially upward. If you do have experience behind you, don't fret, you can just skip ahead or pick and choose from lessons that interest you. The website is very straight forward, uncluttered and easy to navigate. Personally the appearance and the ease of use on a site like this is extremely important and I found Jamplay to fit my expectations.
The service is not free. It cost $19.95 per month which at first made me think twice but then when I really considered what I was getting, it was actually pretty cheep. Most 1-on-1 lesson taught at music stores range from $10 to $20 a week and at that you only have one instructor with one perspective to teach you. I think it's important to note that the student is never locked into one style or one instructor but instead they can view and try out an array of styles, difficulty levels and instructors.
What about the instructors? From the courses that I have experienced, I have found the instructors to be knowledgeable and as they teach they tend to interject personal experiences about methods that have worked for them. At first I was taken back by this deviation from the technical aspect of music but then, again after having given some thought to it, I realized that music is a strictly personal endeavor and that no two musicians will every attack the same technique the same way. In the end it was these personal antidotes that I found to be comforting and reassuring. I felt like the lesson was speaking to me as an aspiring musician and not just read from a cue card.
Product Research
Pros
- The cost of membership. $19.95 per month is a bargain compared to the expense of hiring a 1-on-1 instructor.
- The various styles to choose from. Learn full songs or focus on particular styles from "Slipknot to the Beatles," "Advanced Rock styles," "Bluegrass, Fingerstyle," "Jazz Techniques" and "Advanced modes." The lesson choices are very extensive.
- The progressive approach that is taken, leading the student from beginner to advanced in a very systematic way. The courses teaches music theory as well as technical skill.
Cons
- The inability for on the spot critiquing or the ability to ask questions during the lesson. This is one of the benefits of having a 1-on-1 learning experience. Forums are available so questions can be answered.
Bottom-Line: The only hindrance is your motivation to learn but that, like any music course, is universal. You only get out of it what you put into it. I give it a rating of 5 out of 5. It is a well thought out site/product with a lot of valuable content providing a fun and effective way to learn the guitar.
